The European Union and Japan are linked by a Free Trade Agreement signed in 2018, which formed the world's largest open trade area, and laid the groundwork for a joint commitment to support the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. The leaders, during their May 27th, 2021 bilateral summit, reaffirmed their determination to protect the environment, and signed a joint communiqué titled "Towards a Green Alliance".
This "green alliance" is part of a broader commitment made by parties to meet the new challenges posed by the global epidemic and to the trade between the two parties, innovation, connectivity and industrial cooperation.
